My New Year 2017 Resolution

Way too tired here after dancing till 5am to ruminate eloquently on the trials and tribulations of 2016! Whether you loved it or hated it, that’s another year under all our belts and today’s the day to look forward and make the choice to either do stuff better or worse. Here’s a clue, better’s usually better.

As I look back on 2016, ours was a tough one physically and psychologically, living for another year in building site conditions and trying our level best to plough through against challenging circumstances. We’ve made a rod for our own backs, striving for design perfection in every square inch of this large reno, but if you’re going to do it, do it right…. right? I doubt I’ll ever complete a renovation this size again, it’s a bit of a once in a life-timer, so I’ve had to let go of feeling like we’re not doing it ‘fast enough’ and just accept that we can only do what we can do, as fast as we can do it.

It has however felt stupendous to round off 2016 with heating, a working log burner and a hot shower, the things regular people take for granted and which I did, once. Undertaking this reno has made me value the everyday things again, which is a good state of mind to be in, I guess. Lots of people asked us over Christmas when will we finally be finished? I can say with confidence that the end is most certainly in sight, which feels great to be able to say (and believe) on the first day of a new year.

January is going to be an uphill for us, finishing off all the external work on the original part of the house: the roof, ridge tiles, windows and box gutters, whilst praying for fine weather. Meanwhile inside, lots of different flooring can now be laid and the utility will arrive & be fitted meaning my temporary kitchen can finally come downstairs again – hurrah! Work will carry on to bathrooms and tiling, and I might even get a start on the dining room and kitchen, though this is more likely to be February’s design job.

Resolutions? Just one. To have the mother of all house warming parties then begin what I’ve dreamed of here for Moregeous Mansions: events, pop ups, courses and collaborations in this unique home and venue into which Mr M and I have poured our hearts. That’s quite a big enough resolution thanks, I’ll leave the renewed gym membership ’til summer 😉

Happy New Year 2017 everyone, may it be a fabulously more-than-gorgeous one for you. Thanks for sticking with me through the dust and dirt, the ride’s about to get a whole lot more glamorous, I promise xx
