Sensory Garden Update!

Boy, have we been busy! Well, that’s the royal we really ’cause whilst I’ve been working at home on our own site, the building of the new sensory garden at Withington Baths has been pretty much single-handedly down to the incredible Brian and Helen. I’m only having to pop down occasionally for design type questions or ordering materials and I cannot tell you how amazing it’s been to have been working with such can-do people.  When I do pop down there are faces like this, so I keep visiting to a minimum 😉2016-06-01_0002So what’s happened down there since my first post, pre-works, all about the design and inspiration? First up the pergola arrived from eDecks, to be unpacked by the LWB team and swiftly painted. If you’re thinking of buying a bespoke pergola I can’t recommend this company enough, all the bits and pieces come with it, bolts and posts etc ready for installation. Brian had it constructed in no time, after Helen & I had slapped some primer and undercoat on it to create an elegant white Edwardian feel.2016-06-01_0004Then the flooring super slabs arrived. I say super slabs because literally everyone has stopped in their tracks and simply said WOW. In three sizes, 60cm x 90cm, 90cm x 90cm and 120cm by 90cm, they are more than impressive and more than heavy!2016-06-01_0005It’s a very good job that Mandarin Stone sent their biggest wagon and a forklift, and that Mr M had an hour spare. He really should know better. When I say stuff like do you fancy nipping to the Baths with me, I mean do you fancy hoisting giant slate slabs into a cellar for us please thank you extra chicken for you tonight I love you.2016-06-01_00072016-06-01_0008And from that point on there was no stopping Brian. Digging, levelling, flattening, hoisting, carrying, shovelling, barrowing Brian. He’s like a one man machine, crying out for more tonne bags of sharp sand on the hour every hour. Thank you Bentleys for speedy delivery service & help with this!2016-06-01_0006Look how quickly it’s come on already and imagine these stunning tiles all cleaned up and colour enhanced in deep grey, with our wonderful wisteria climbing over the pergola. I can’t wait!2016-06-01_0003I think our little Withy Baths garden is going to look *even* better than the web-site image (below right) which had me sold on them, especially when we get the seating, lighting and plants in too!2016-06-01_00092016-06-01_0001It’s hard to believe that a year ago people were still telling us that our community group couldn’t possibly successfully take over and run Manchester’s last Edwardian pool and many didn’t believe that this gorgeous heritage building could be saved as a working Baths. In just two weeks on Jun 18th, we’ll be hosting our first birthday as a community run facility, with a lovely new garden to hold the celebrations in.

C’mon Brian, we’ve a party to organise, get those tiles finished 😉

IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY AND WE’RE HAVING A PARTY!

That’s right – on Saturday 18th June 2016 we will be ONE YEAR OLD, and like any one year old, we LOVE a party! So, we’re having one! Come and joing us from 12.30pm for fun and frolics both inside and out, with free swimming in the afternoon. We’ll have the BIG inflatable out in the pool, mini sports sessions (weather permitting) outside and the launch of our beautiful new Sensory Garden. Like all good parties, we think we can also promise cakes and refreshments. We’ve even ordered sunshine! We’d love our members, supporters and our local community to come along and help us celebrate what has been an AMAZING year for Love Withington Baths
